Since 1791, the historic French Market features at this time the Café Du Monde, a French Market tradition since 1862, serves Café au lait (Coffee and Milk) and beignets (a square piece of dough, fried and covered with powdered sugar, served in orders of three (open 24 hours), the Halle des Boucheries or Butcher's Market, a fruit and vegetable market, a fish market, and grocery goods sold in the Market's Red Stores.

The area shown in this square does not cover what is known to locals as the actual "French Market" where fresh vegetables grown by the vendors are sold (look just to the right of where someone notated 'Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville' for the correct location). However, at one time the French Market did come all the way up to Café du Monde and the café was considered to be in it. The area shown does contain many cool shops and the Gazebo (an open-air bar with jazz music).

The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park office and visitor's center is in the French Market.
