Casa Casuarina. This was, for many years, a dilapidated apartment building called the Amsterdam Palace. It is a copy of the home of Christopher Columbus' son Diego (in the Dominican Republic?). It had (and still has) a domed observatory visible in the upper left (which was accessible, though only by a very spooky route, when this was apartments). Versace bought an ugly 1960s hotel just to the south and demolished it, to provide himself space for a pool, parking, garden, etc. CC
Gianni Versace was walking home from buying coffee and magazines at the News Cafe on the morning of 7/15/97 when he was shot and killed at his front gate by Andrew Cunanan.
