stadium, 2010_construction, ice hockey arena
To replace Pittsburgh's aging Civic Arena, this new $321 million dollar building opened August 18, 2010 with a sold out Paul McCartney concert. As the new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL ice hockey franchise, CONSOL Energy Center is also the first NHL arena to be LEED certified ("green"). The first NHL game at the arena was a pre-season game on September 22, 2010 with the Pittsburgh Penguins defeating the Detroit Red Wings 5-1. The Penguins' first season opener at the arena was on October 7, 2010 when they fell to the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2.
