At full capacity, the Morial Convention Center boasts more than 1.1 million square feet of exhibit space that can be combined in various configurations, making it one of the largest and most flexible contiguous space exhibit hall in the United States. It was built as part of the 1984 World's Fair, held in New Orleans and was made an integral part of the fair, the fair being held next door at the riverfront in what is now the Riverwalk Marketplace.

During Hurricane Katrina thousands of people were directed to the Convention Center as an unofficial evacuation center.

  • I have worked at a lot of trade shows at the Morial Center over the years. One of the worst parts of the flood for me (far away in Maryland) was seeing how it became a gathering point for some people who were in a whole mess of trouble. I don't know how it will affect me when I go back next time, knowing the terrible scenes that have played out there.
  • made during the 1989 worlds fair i might have got the date wrong though
  • Have they gotten rid of the stink yet?
  • This is a very large place, bring comfortable shoes! I was at two conferences in the past few years, you wouldn't know what happened here during Katrina.
