This multi-purpose stadium is most famous as the site of The Rumble in the Jungle between world Heavyweight champion George Foreman against former world champion and challenger Muhammad Ali on October 30, 1974. At the time it was known as Stade du 20 Mai (20th of May Stadium) in 1967. Following the downfall of the regime of President Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997, the stadium was renamed as Stade Tata Raphaël after Raphaël de la Kethulle de Ryhove, initiator of the stadium in 1952.
