Newgate is best known for the references to Newgate Prison which stood approximately where the Old Baily (or the Central Criminal Court to use its correct title) now stands. The original gate was also used as a prison and appears to have been built in response to the congestion caused by the building of St Pauls Cathedral which caused traffic chaos at the nearby Ludgate.

The 8 gates to the City of London are:
1. Cripplegate
2. Aldgate
3. Aldersgate
4. Ludgate
5. Bishopsgate
6. Moorgate
7. Newgate
8. Traitors Gate
