Samding Lamasery (Samding Gompa)

Legend says that this monastery was built to assure that the water of the lake did not overflow. In 1716, when the Mongols invaded Tibet, the female incarnation transformed herself and the nuns into sows. The Mongols entered by force and were astonished by the sight. After transforming back, the impressed invaders left the monastery unsacked. But the Cultural Revolution brought the walls down with dynamite. Some buildings have been rebuilt up to now.
Samding was founded in the 13th century by Khetsün Zhönnu Drub.
