Costa Rica / San Jose / San José / Calle 1ª

Displaying a classic Art Nouveau, this historic building was designed by architect Fransisco Tenca and completed in 1907 for the German immigrant Otto Steinvorth and his brother Richard. It was confiscated from the brothers during WWII after allegations surfaced that they supported Hitler. Although it was declared a national historic sight in 1999, it is in an obvious state of disrepair, and had an entire wing demolished after its sale in 1960 to a Samuel Grinspan. Plans for restoration have been put forward, at a cost of ¢110 colones.
