The history of Lanark County is filled with many rich and colorful stories and people.
One of the “biggest” events was the making of the Mammoth Cheese in 1892. Twelve Lanark‐area cheese factories were called upon to provide the curd for the cheese and an experimental dairy station was set up in the railway yard in Perth Ontario to receive the curd and press it into a Mammoth Cheese! It was to be 6 feet tall, 9 feet in diameter, 28 feet in circumference and an incredible 22,000 pounds. The production involved well over 207,000 lbs of milk which equaled the milk from 10,000 cows for three days. Over the winter months the cheese was kept at a steady temperature and on April 17th, 1893 at 7:00 the Mammoth Cheese was transported by rail to the Chicago Worlds Fair. As large as the Cheese was it was also judged as good cheese with a score of 95 out of a possible 100.

Today the story continues to be told as the Town of Perth unveiled the latest replica of the Mammoth Cheese in the Tay Basin. Information plaques and a central location will help this story live on into the future.
