Radu Vodă Monastery (Bucharest)

Romania / Bukarest / Bucharest / Strada Radu Vodă, 24A
church, monastery, orthodox christianity, historic site

Bucharest, 24 Radu Voda Street. Convent for monks.
Dedication day: "The Holy Trinity", the second day after Whitsuntide.
The monastery was founded by Alexandru II Mircea (1568-1577) and his lady Ecaterina (Catherine) to give thanks for their victory in battle. It was intended to be the metropolitan church of the capital.
Around 1613, Radu Voda Mihnea Voivode (who reined between 1611 and 1616) had the holy establishment reconstructed on its former foundations - which explains why the monastery bears his name.
The monastery was completely renovated during 1969-1974, on the initiative of patriarch Justinian Marina. Upon his death in 1977, the patriach was laid to rest in a grave in the interior wall of the monastery.
The monastery shelters the holy relics of Saint Nectarius the Thaumaturge of the Egina Island, the protector of the monastic establishment, which are worshipped by the devout faithful of Bucharest.
