The original 500,000 sq. ft. building was constructed in 1952 to produce the Westinghouse J-40 jet engine for the Navy. The much troubled J-40 program was cancelled in May of 1953 following engine power problems. The Navy then used the building for the storage of machine tools under its industrial reserve program until 1959 when wheel manufacturer Kelsey-Hayes purchased the 157 acre, 13 building, 1 million sq. ft. property for $2,26 million. After spending an additional $4 million to expand the plant by 260,000 sq. ft., Kelsey-Hayes closed 2 of its wheel making plants in Detroit and moved production to the Romulus facility in 1961. Kelsey-Hayes produced wheels until 1997 when the plant was closed with the loss of 435 jobs.
