Fan Mountain Observatory, of the University of Virginia's Department of Astronomy. This is the research observatory, and is closed to the public except for an open house held twice a year. It is free, but tickets are required (

Three telescopes are currently located at Fan Mountain (actually Mount Oliver, in the Fan Mountains), a 40-inch astrometric reflector, a 31-inch infrared telescope, and a 10-inch astrograph).
Norfolk State University (
sst.nsu.edu/physics.php) is erecting the 24-inch RRRT robotic telescope on the summit
