Hilton Hawaiian Village opened the Tapa Tower in 1982 on the site of the resort's former Village Tower, torn down three years earlier. The name Tapa refers to a traditional Pacific Island cloth made from tree bark.

The Tapa Tower has its own conference center, with ballroom and lounge.
