With just 500 armed men, in the dead of the night, Tanaji Malusare and his brother Suryaji attacked Sinhagad (then called Kondhana). The battle was fierce as the enemy Mughal soldiers were around 1500. The captain of the enemy Udaybhan Rathod was a Rajput.
The Maratha soldiers faught with immense bravery and in the end won back the fort. Tanaji Malusare fought like a lion and in the end died a hero's death. The enemy captain was also killed.
The fort was thereafter named Sinhagad (Fort of a lion) as a tribute to this brave worrior. This is the Samadhi (final resting place of Tanaji).
