Silver Queen Mine | place with historical importance, mica mine

Canada / Ontario / Perth / Elm Grove Road, 2243
place with historical importance, mine, mica mine

The Silver Queen Mine is located within Murphys Point Provincial Park on Big Rideau Lake. From 1903 to about 1920, this was a working mica, feldspar and apatite mine that provided an extra source of income for many of this area’s local farmers and families. The ore was shipped to markets by barge from Hogg Bay along the Rideau Canal as well as by train from Perth. The Silver Queen is an important piece of our history because it symbolizes the hardships and importance of small-scale mining in this southern extension of the Canadian Shield. Today park staff guide thousands of visitors each year into this preserved mine, where the minerals sparkle from lights powered by a generator. The trail to the mine tells the story of the area’s geological past and the history of mining in the area, and a restored bunkhouse with period décor is also onsite and open during guided tours.
