Canada / Ontario / Smiths Falls
place with historical importance, lock (water navigation)

Within the 202 km length of the historic Rideau Canal this is one set of locks that stands out from the others along the system. The Combined Locks, also named Foster’s Locks, in Smiths Falls is the newest of any of the canal lock stations. Built in the 1970’s, this single new hydraulic lock was built slightly north of the existing, three hand-operated locks (numbers 28, 29 and 30). The original flight of three locks still remains close by in tribute to the original craftsmanship but the new Combined Locks is an amazing feat of modern technology as well. Measuring 7.9 m (26 feet), the Combined Lock station has the single highest lift of any Rideau lock. Hosting thousands of visitors a year this locations exceptional design is not to be missed.
