"Fonske" is a locally famous fountain statue on the Fochplein. Its full name is Fons Sapientiae, Latin for "fountain of wisdom". The statue depicts a student holding an open book with one hand and pouring water into his open head with a mug held in the other hand. Interpretations differ as to whether the water represents wisdom, beer, or both. Like Manneken Pis in Brussels, Fonske is from time to time dressed up in costumes befitting whatever occasion arises.
The statue was commissioned in 1975 in honor of the 550th anniversary of the University of Leuven.
