These are aerial/satellite sensor calibration ranges. They give visual contrast to test sensor optics and capture systems. It is not so frequently used since NASA de-prioritized its Earth-Sciences Applications Directorate (ESAD) and folded its functions and missions into other directorates. Also, since 9/11 Stennis Space Center no longer allows commercial overflights to use the ground control area here to calibrate their cameras. Further with the advent of more advanced digital aerial cameras there is little demand for this kind of test range anymore. |
