Gaza (Territorial) Division

The Israel Defense Forces Gaza Division (Territorial), is subordinate to the Southern Regional Command. Its area of operation is the Gaza Strip and the area surrounding it. The division's commander is Brigadier-General Eyal Eisenberg, who replaced Moshe Tamir on 19 November 2008.

Gaza (Territorial) Division HQ

The Gaza Division had been entrusted with the safety and security of Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip after the Six-Day War in times of peace and armed conflict. In August 2005, the division, along with the rest of the IDF, officially ended its presence in the Gaza Strip as part of Israel's unilateral disengagement plan when Jewish settlements were dismantled. However, the Gaza Division has repeatedly entered the Gaza Strip it is claimed in response to rocket attacks from Palestinian militant groups based in Gaza.

This new IDF Camp Facility has been created only since the evacuation of the Gaza Strip by Israel in August 2005, with a view to defence against Qassam Rocket attack by Hamas from within the Gaza Strip. In this respect whilst still very much within range of such rocket attack, this camp is very much better placed than the Division's existing brigade garrisons at Nahal Oz (North) and Kerem Shalom (South) respectively which are established next to the Gaza Border Crossing points.
