The property opened in 1984 as the Emerald of Anaheim and was later known as The Pan Pacific Hotel. Disney purchased it in December 1995 and changed its name to the Disneyland Pacific Hotel. In December 2000, the hotel was remodeled and reopened as Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel to complement one of the themed lands in the adjacent Disney's California Adventure Park. Originally, it featured a private entrance to the park, though this was closed off in fall 2004. It was renovated form 2022 to 20224 and renamed the Pixar Place Hotel.

The hotel is one of the few tall buildings in the Western Hemisphere to have a 13th floor. Due to the common superstition of the number 13, most buildings in America skip that number — the floor after 12 is 14, then 15 and so on. This is a result of the original owners being from Japan, where 13 is not considered bad luck. Disney has not since changed this.
