Evangelical Church in Germany. The Marienkirche is one of Berlin's oldest churches. It is the only structure still standing from the historical centre of Berlin, the buildings around the church where heavily demaged in the Second World War and finally demolished by the East German Government in the late sixtees. The large open space is now dominated by the Berliner Fernsehturm.

The reason it was not destroyed during the allied bombing raids on Berlin during WW2 was that its large copper tower provided an excellent reference point for the primitive radars in use at that time.
