Forming part of the Lesbury conservation area, the cottage was constructed circa 1840-50 (it is shown on the 1860's tithe map and earlier maps it is shown as the Poor House) to house workers of the Duke of Northumberland Estate. The cottage stands on the site of the former Poor House and stone gateposts from this structure still remain and can be seen at the left side of the entrance to the path way adjacent to the cottage. The path way leads to a footbridge over the River Aln. Stepping stones crossing the river can be seen slightly upstream to the footbridge and may denote an ancient crossing point. See:
