 beach, island, interesting place

Shepherd Island was inhabited by Old Man Shepherd, an Englishman, in the early 1800's, hence its name. Story has it that Shepherd blazed the trail from Almirante to Chiriqui Grande where there is now a highway. In return, Shepherd was given title to the island. Altho many call the island Isla Pastores (Shepherds Island in Spanish), the true name is the English version.

Shepherd Island is located a couple of miles from the mainland and about 9 miles from the banana boat town of Almirante by boat. The beautiful Caribbean island resort called Starfish Reef is located at the SW tip and has a white sand beach, colorful coral reef, salt water swimming lagoon, jungle hiking trails through the rainforest, alot of tripical fruits, and is a working chocolate plantation offering working vcations on the farm, yoga retreats, and much more. www.StarfishReef.com
