Three courthouses have stood on this site. The middle section of the current courthouse was constructed in 1932 in the Art Deco style and designed by Voelcker and Dixon. An addition was added on the east side of the building in the 1950s and another addition to the west side in the 1980s. The first courthouse was built in 1879 and designed by Frederick Ernst Ruffini of Austin, Texas. The second courthouse was built in 1897 and designed by Marshall R. Sanguinet of Fort Worth, Texas.

  • While the original building is attractive, the ugly addition on the west side is horrendous. The county commissioners completely destroyed the architectural integrity that the courthouse square once had. It should be designated as the ugliest courthouse in Texas.
