Much of the National Mall is landfill. This building was originally a lock keeper's house at the eastern end of the Washington branch of the Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal. The house, which was built in 1835, was near the outflow of the canal to the Potomac River and the western end of the Washington City Canal, which was constructed on the route of Tiber Creek.
