The concrete storage igloos were constructed by the West Virginia Ordinance Works during WWII, for the purpose of safely storing the tons of dynamite being produced by the site. When they were originally built, the igloos were camouflaged with a thin cover of dirt and grass.

Today the site is mainly of interest to tourists interested in the Mothman phenomenon, which was closely associated with this site. The Mothman Museum in nearby Point Pleasant distributes maps and directions to the TNT Area, while cautioning that some of the land is private property.

This site has some photos of the igloos: www.graveaddiction.com/tnt2.html

  • Directions to an open igloo, as quoted from the Mothman Museum's map: After turning right (eastwards) on County Road 11 (aka Potter's Creek Road)... "Drive approximately 1/4 mile. Look for hand written graffiti saying "DEER KILLER" on guard rail located on right berm of road. Stop and face guardrail. Walk approx. 50 yards. You will see a pond on the left. The open igloo is located on the right and covered with brush and foliage."
