The St Clement Dane’s Church Vestry Hall was built in 1897 and was purchased by the LSE in 1961 as a redundant building.
The Parish Hall remained for some fifty years a tired and underused building at the very centre of the LSE campus.
The space was remodelled to create 3 newly fitted state-ofthe-art teaching spaces, each accommodating 60 students. A new wheelchair access lift was introduced without demolition of walls. New heating system with advanced controls was installed, along with new lighting system and its control. The building is naturally ventilated contributing to the carbon emission reduction strategy.
The façade was sensitively restored. The brickwork was cleaned gently and where heavy black carbonation proved impossible to remove it was left in place rather than causing damage to the face of the brick. The roof coverings were renewed to match the original materials. Furniture has been chosen to enable interactive working.
