Haffner Hall

The Haffner Language and Culture House provides a living-learning experience for students interested in intercultural exchange through the study of foreign languages and cultures. It is a coeducational, non-smoking hall open to both Bryn Mawr and Haverford students. Opened in 1971, Haffner is composed of three separate buildings joined by a common courtyard and dining hall. Each building (or "tower") houses programs for several languages, but the towers are named for the three languages with which the language and culture house program began: French, German, and Spanish.

Any students interested in the study of Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish languages and cultures are welcome to apply to live in Haffner. Residence in Haffner may complement a student's current course of study, develop interests beyond the classroom, and/or strengthen and maintain language skills. All levels of language skill are welcome, and all Haffner residents are required to sign a pledge indicating their commitment to full participation in Language and Culture House activities. To promote the use of the languages in the houses, speakers of a particular language are grouped together.

A Program Coordinator may reside in the hall and administers hall and campus-wide educational and social activities such as language tables, special study breaks, and cultural celebrations. Haffner resources, including an audiovisual resource room and library, are available to all campus groups interested in cultural programming.
